How We Fix a Leaning Memorial
We don’t just shove a stone back to upright and pack some dirt around it. That’s a temporary fix that will fail within a season. A professional restoration involves several key steps.
The Strip Back: We carefully remove the memorial from the ground. This gives us a clean slate to inspect the soil condition underneath.
The Foundation Slab: We install a large, reinforced concrete base that is much wider than the headstone itself. Think of this like a snowshoe – it spreads the weight of the stone across a larger surface area so it cannot sink into the soft spots.
The Ground Anchor System: This is the most important modern advancement in masonry. We use a stainless steel BRAMM or NAMM approved ground anchor. This is a long, heavy-duty rod that is driven deep into the undisturbed earth below the grave level and then locked into the stone and the base.
Even if the top layer of soil shifts or “heaves,” the anchor keeps the memorial vertical and prevents it from ever toppling over.
Is Your Memorial Unsafe?
If you notice a gap appearing between the stone and the grass, or if the stone moves when pushed gently (the “hand test”), it’s time to call in a professional. Many councils now carry out regular safety inspections. If a stone is deemed “at risk,” they may fit a temporary wooden stake or, in some cases, lay the stone flat for safety.
Restoring a stone early is far more cost-effective than waiting for it to fall and crack. A simple re-levelling job can turn into an expensive repair if left too long.
